He sat down at the table looking dead on the inside. The sloppily applied nametag with equally sloppy writing on it hung at an awkward angle on his shirt. Five minutes to make an impression and already Xander wasn't off to a good start.

"It's a pleasure to meet you...." he squinted at her nametag, "Amelia."

Five minutes is all they have to make an impression, but Lia has never been the type to enjoy dressing up. Her clothes are nice but comfortable, perhaps a little too casual compared to those worn by some, but she still had made sure to put a certain amount of effort into making sure to look nice (her Comfey even takes it upon itself to rest atop of her head like a flower crown).

Whatever she may think of Xander Belmont when first seeing him, she still gives him a soft and gentle smile, perhaps a little shy.

Wow.

She's stunning. If she put in the minimum effort, Xander can't tell. To think, he'd shown up to this with unkempt hair and bags under his eyes. He sat a little straighter and forced a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

"Lia. Pretty name for a pretty girl." A genuine compliment delivered in a tone drier than the deserts of Orre.

"Since we don't have a lot of time, why don't we play a game? A shortened version of Twenty Questions. We each ask the other three questions."

An excellent icebreaker, wouldn't you say?

"I'll go first." he paused and thought for a moment, "What do you for a living?"

What do you do for a living?

”Oh, that’s a bit tricky… I’m a historian, worked as assistant curator at the Slateport museum until recently, but I quit to become a ranger.” A long story that she doesn’t really have enough time to share with him. She could ask what he does, but wouldn’t it be boring to repeat the same question? She wouldn’t want to seem like a boring person…

That's an oversimplification of what Yvette Belmont and @idris did, honestly. Good thing they weren't around to hear him explain it so poorly.

Xander shifted when it was his turn to answer a question. He instinctively looked to his Smeargle out the corner of his eye. Sitting at the back of the room, the Pokemon sketched what it saw while patiently waiting for the date to finish.

"I like to draw. I'm actually an artist." and a ranger and a gym leader. It's amazing he even found the time to sketch anymore with all his responsibilities.

His turn to ask a question again.

"What's the most interesting thing you've learned as a historian?"

It’s the sort of thing Lia used to dream about, having spent the grand majority of her life in Petalburg, for while both her parents are also academically inclined, her family also happens to be strict and traditionalist. No exploring for her, at least not back then.

”An artist? I’d love to see some of your works sometime.” She smiles, but will she ever get the chance? If only she knew they’re displayed at the art museum that happens to be Ever Grande’s gym, and that both of them actually share a profession.

”Hmm… Good question! I think probably learning more about the Draconids’ way of life. I find it interesting to see how people lived in the past and how that has influenced our culture.” Too much of a nerdy answer? Probably. She even realises as much, and she chuckles lightly at this. ”Sorry, I love talking about things like those. Uhmmm… What’s something you’re really proud of?”

"More than I would have liked." there's something to be said about constantly being on the move. Never sticking around long enough to form any meaningful connection. The only source of comfort, and annoyance, is your family.

Love and hate. Xander felt both when thinking back on his childhood. A sweet bitterness that held inside his chest longer than it should. He almost sighed but remembered where he was and what he was doing.

"Then you should stop by my gym. A lot of artwork is on display there."

Xander listened to her gush with a smile. A little awkward on a face so used to frowning, it settled in eventually. "No apology needed. I don't mind hearing you talk about your passion." his features softened, "Funny that you mentioned Draconids, though. I actually have Draconid ancestors." not that he knew much about them.

A finger tapped against the table at her question. Had Xander done anything to be proud of? He spent so much of his life on autopilot until recently. There's always his art, but it's such an expected answer.

Ah, actually, he had something after all.

"Being a gym leader. It's a recent thing, but it's a positive change."

They were almost out of time. Only one more question to ask. What to make it?

"Last question. Can I have your phone number?"

It’s after hastily writing it down on for him that she gives one last smile. One that comes accompanied by words of goodbye:
